Awakening Volume 1 45% off
Awakening Volume 1 is sort of a crime noir story about zombies. It hits stores June 24, and you can check out Brandon's review of it here. Whether or not you've read the advance review you should still consider picking this bad boy up. Why? Because you could get it at 45% off and get an exclusive art print to boot.
Creators Nick Tapalansky and Alex Eckman-Lawn have partnered with Discount Comic Book Service (DCBS) to offer the book at 45% off as well as an exclusive 8 ½” x 11” art print by artist Eckman-Lawn. That means for only $10.97 you can pick up the book. Which is a lot less than the stodgier price of $19.95. The creators of Awakening seem to think pretty highly of DCBS as well.
“DCBS is a fantastic alternative if you don’t have a local shop you can support or if you need the book shipped internationally,” Tapalansky explains. “Brick and mortar retailers are the reason we’ve made it as far as we have and we encourage people to continue utilizing the pre-order coupon we released a few weeks ago, which we’ve gotten tremendous feedback on from retailers, in conjunction with their local shops.”
So there you go. You've been given the preorder coupon, advance review and now 45% off (and Omnicomic will have an interview with the creators up in the near future). You really have no reason not to get this book. Really.

Exclusive Print and 45% Discount on Awakening Volume One Pre-Order!
April 13th, 2009 – New Paltz, NY. Continuing their push to spread the word about the release of Awakening Volume One, creators Nick Tapalansky and Alex Eckman-Lawn have partnered with Discount Comic Book Service (DCBS) to offer the release at a staggering 45% discount along with an exclusive 8 ½” x 11” art print, shown at right, signed by Eckman-Lawn.
“We’ve got a lot of love for the guys over at DCBS,” Tapalansky says. “They’ve always been firm supporters of indie books, offering as deep a discount as they can to try and get as many copies of books into the hands of readers as possible. The exclusive print is our way of saying thanks to them.”
“One of the best parts of this deal is that DCBS ships internationally,” adds Eckman-Lawn. “We’ve had people asking us how they can get their hands on Awakening in other countries since the first issue solicitation hit online. Now they can get the first hardcover at a ridiculously discounted price and an exclusive print!”

That being said, the team doesn’t want to see people forgo their local comic shops.
The exclusive print is for pre-orders only, so those who wish to receive both the 45%discount and the print through DCBS should place their orders as soon as possible.
The solicitation for Awakening Volume One reads as follows:
“The once peaceful city of Park Falls has been tainted by a series of gruesome murders and missing persons. Cynthia Ford, well known as the town crazy, comes forward to speak with retired police detective Derrick Peters one January afternoon. She claims to have information about the murders, but does she hold the key to unlocking the mystery or has she truly gone insane?
To Derrick’s disbelief she utters one word:
Zombies.
Unable to ignore Cynthia’s information, though not sharing her beliefs, Derrick and others in the city explore the mystery as weeks turn to months and the death toll rises. Could Cynthia have been right? Follow the first half of Park Falls’s year-long struggle for answers here…”
Awakening Volume One is a 144-page hardcover with dust jacket published by Archaia. It is due in stores this June.
About Awakening: Chapters 1 – 3 of Awakening were originally serialized and released in 2007 by Archaia to rave reviews and four British Eagle Award nominations: Favourite Newcomer Writer (Nick Tapalansky), Favourite Full Colour Comic Book – American, Favourite New Comic Book, and Favourite Letterer (Thomas Mauer). Fans and critics alike enjoyed the unique take on the zombie genre, focusing on the noir mystery of a city slowly rotting from within rather than the typical mass uprising/fight for survival. Referred to as existential horror by the publisher, critics have said that it’s “The coolest and most original zombie piece since The Walking Dead,” (Broken Frontier), “The next 30 Days of Night,” (The Pullbox), and that main character Derrick Peters is “where Phillip Marlowe meets George Romero,” (Horrorview).
