X-Men Origins: Silver Fox

No, you didn't misread that title. Every Thursday up until the May 1 release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Omnicomic will be profiling the mutants in the film. So sit back and get yourself up to speed on some of the lesser known characters. Gotham City Dossiers will return in a few weeks, so in the meantime you're on your own for finding cool indie comics (I'm sure you'll manage). Real Name: Silver Fox, although she has used the alias Zora De Plata before. Powers: Weapon X has given Silver Fox an artificial healing factor. In addition, she has been given an artificial age suppressant. Silver Fox has extensive training in military espionage and martial arts. First Appearance: Wolverine (Volume 2) #10 (1989). Background: A member of the Blackfoot Indian tribe, Silver Fox met Wolverine while he was living in the Canadian Rockies in the early 1900s. She and Wolverine spent a time romantically involved- until Victor Creed, A.K.A. Sabretooth, brutally raped and, apparently, killed her (Fox is just one of a long line of people Sabretooth has slaughtered just to get under Wolvie’s skin). Unknown to Logan, Fox survived her wounds. Over the course of the next few years, Silver Fox became involved with the government’s Weapon X program. By sheer chance, she is reunited with Wolverine and Sabretooth, working with them as agents. This is where the story gets blurry- and with good reason. Weapon X tampered with the memories of many agents, including these three. It’s unclear how much the three even remembered of their own history while working for Weapon X- or even how much of their past is a false memory implanted by Weapon X. Upon the realization of having her memory tampered with, Silver Fox turned on her former teammates during a covert mission to Cuba in the 1960s. Now believing the American government to be evil, Fox became a Hydra terrorist. Silver Fox often took painstaking efforts to prevent Wolverine from learning about his past in the Weapon X program- killing old Weapon X personnel and destroying abandoned sites before he could track them down himself. Her reasons for this remain unclear. Eventually, circumstances forced Fox, Wolverine, and Sabretooth into a confrontation with Aldo Ferro, a Weapon X operative who had developed the implants that had altered her and her former allies’ memories. During the confrontation, Sabretooth killed Fox- in an eerie parallel of her previous “death” (er...or false memory of her death). Fox is now buried at a cabin in the Canadian Rockies that Wolverine believes he lived with her at- evidence that his past relationship with Fox is not simply altered memories. Whether Fox will make an appearance in the Wolverine film as an old lover, Weapon X agent, terrorist, human, mutant, ally, or enemy is an interesting topic of debate- although, it’s possible she could play all of these roles.
