New TMNT film in the works?
Update #2: So maybe there isn't a TMNT movie in the works. According to Steve Murphy who has devoted his fair share of time to TMNT works says that talk of a reboot of the franchise is "...complete nonsense and entirely untrue [emphasis his]." Now we have two sides of the story, and questions about which side is true. Stay tuned.
Update #1: The post has been taken down from Eastman's message board. Perhaps he let loose something not quite ready for announcing?
Kevin Eastman is somewhat of a big deal. His current gig includes the Heavy Metal series, but you might recognize something else that he (and Peter Laird) created called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Heard of them? Thought so. In any case, as with any successful comic there has been a slew of merchandising related to TMNT, including three live action films and one CGI film. And while none of them were bad per se (where else would I go for the lyrical stylings of Vanilla Ice?), they weren't exactly mind-blowing either. So what does Eastman do? He goes and confirms that there is a potential reboot in the works for TMNT (at least on Comics2Film).
"Yes, it is true. Although the CGI film did well enough to warrant a sequel, there has been much talk between Imagi and Warners to do a better 're-invention' of the TMNT's [sic], in a live action film," Eastman wrote, continuing, "like what was done with Batman."
"Back to basics, back to the origin and the intro of the Shredder, etc...there have been talks, trips to Northampton to talk to Mr Laird, and discussions with the original 'first' TMNT film director Steve Barron to come back and do it right--but no official word yet...will keep you posted."
Honestly, I don't know how I feel about this. I think it would be really cool to see a new TMNT movie with today's technology as it pertains to movies, but I'm also starting to feel like all these reboots are getting slightly out of hand. "Reboot" is quickly becoming a hot word in the film industry and inevitably leads to the word "trilogy," so I'm thinking when Eastman says one TMNT film is in the works he actually means we'll see three.
This is still something that is clearly in a rumor stage so I'm not getting worked up one way or the other just yet. But its definitely something to keep an eye on.
