Hank McCoy (Before the Fur)

As you read this I’m going under the knife. Yeah, that’s right- it’s nothing life threatening, but I’ll be receiving surgery today. It’s kind of a disruption in my life. So, fittingly, I thought I would take a break from my more ‘academic’ (I know that word is a stretch) postings of late and write about something different. Surgery. Kind of makes me think of Iron Man. Oh, because you know- I’m so much like Tony Stark. With the money, and the babes, and the non-stop-action…that’s me. But still. The pacemaker thing just makes me think about it (not that I even have a pacemaker). What a great movie. I haven’t even really given myself time to think that hard about the next one. I’ve been looking at the casting though…sort of trying to figure out where the film is headed kind of thing. Mickey Rourke as Whiplash. Interesting, cool…but that’s it? Just Whiplash? I mean, in the comics, Whiplash was no joke or anything- true to that teaser image for the film, whiplash sported some high-tech gear. A whip in the right hands is bad- a whip designed to administer the kind of electrical voltage that would slow Iron Man down would kill most human beings instantly. But still, a whole movie? Just this guy? I mean I know that Mandarin is being primed for his grand appearance in the third film (any guesses on a casting job for that one? What about Chow-Yun Fat?) and that this incarnation of whiplash is going to have a few bits and pieces taken from Crimson Dynamo (one of my favorite Iron Man villains and, I think, a slightly more iconic figure in the series- he’s a burnt out Russian war hero who starts selling his services to the highest bitter when he stops getting the attention his finesse use to garner), but it still just seems a little light on conflict, doesn’t it? Of course, like most die hard Iron Man fans know, Stark’s life usually IS the conflict. Besides alcoholism (which I fully expect Downey will capture vividly- it’s like the role was made for him), there’s the fact that Rhodes doesn’t exactly see eye to eye on Tony not supporting the military and taking his own battle suit out for a spin. Also, while Natasha Romanov is currently considered an Avenger of well renown, that certainly wasn’t always the case- in true James-Bond-girl style I suspect her loyalty will very much be left in question throughout the movie. I love Scarlett Johansson for this role. You know she’s going to pull off the accent. Actually, I’m surprised she didn’t get scooped up FOR a James Bond movie before she got cast in this part, to be honest… There’s Hammer too. A less-ethical competitor of Stark who is in the business of designing weapons who is bound to make life difficult for our hero. Still…is it just me, or does it feel like maybe something is missing here? You know who I’d like to see in an Iron Man movie? Masque (speaking of Bond girls…on that rare occasion when the Bond girl turns out to be the villain). If anybody is near the top of the rogue’s gallery pecking order for Stark, it has got to be her. She’s brutal when she needs to be- to get the job done. But in a lot of ways, she’s a lot like Stark: she was raised in high society, is good looking, brilliant and ambitious... she even has a physical problem that she hides behind a mask (kind of like Tony…with the heart thing and the armor. Only for her, it’s scarring). It’s the perfect kind of “Does Stark really know what he’s doing- is he fighting her or falling in love with her- how the hell is he going to pull this off” kind of villain that would fit the flavor of the movie so well, you know? I’ve noticed that Olivia Munn, of Attack of the Show, has landed an ‘unspecified’ role in the movie. It might just be a bit part- a one-scene kind of thing. But still, she kind of has that statuesque face for Masque, doesn’t she? Don’t you think she could fit the part? Just dreaming here…
