Defense With The BoomStick

(Disclaimer: This post is an ongoing story set in a world where zombies have taken over and people are fighting to survive anyway they can. Originally it was a post of news and tips to help survivors make it one more day alive, but now it has became a story of my fight after being bitten and partially cured to walk as a half-zombie among them.)

I thought over the last three and half years I'd seen it all, but yesterday was one of the worst I have seen.

This past week I decided to stay in the observation post I set up, looking out at a possible entrance through the wall. I did see more movement around this entrance up on the wall- a sure sign that they do have people watching this area.

After watching them move about up there for an hour or so I saw why they where there. A group of survivors was heading for the door lead by a small contingent of troops with them.

The worst part was when they got closer to the wall and the door.

They were about 100 feet from the door when a fast moving herd of zombies came out of nowhere and hit them hard. Most were the radioactive zombies in the mix, driving the regular shamblers on as a front line taking most of the fire. When the pack was maybe ten feet from the band of survivors the radioactive zombies jumped through the lines.

They attacked like nothing I've ever seen before, just biting and ripping anything in their path. They even took down a few shamblers who were in their way, but what's craziest is that they seemed to mostly hit the soldiers who were armed first.

For the most part they were ignoring the civilians making a dash for the gate in a desperate attempt to get away from the carnage behind them. The crazier part was the people on the wall weren’t really helping either group at all. They weren’t opening the gate to let in the civilians, nor were they helping their fellow soldiers that were being slaughtered.

What they did do was armed the defenses and turned the automated guns on. Anything and everything moving out there was a target civilians, soldiers and zombies alike all were being shot at and taken down by the defenses.

All of the civilians and the shamblers got taken down in the fire with a few of the radioactive zombies that were stopping for a snack as well. Too many of the faster zombies saw the fire coming and got the hell out of there back into cover of some woods that they must have been hiding out in.

It’s crazy to think they are doing tactics and seem to be acting smarter and smarter the longer they keep going. With this kind of reaction I don’t think there will be anyway for me to get through this spot and to the other side, but with the way the people on the wall reacted I'm not sure if that's gonna be the place I want to be.

Is it worth it to keep fighting and surviving if they're already willing to do what they did to justify their own survival? I'm keeping my zombie side at bay with the remaining drugs and compounds from taking over me completely. These folks are still human and are already deciding who is worth saving and who isn’t, even letting their own men go down as well.

I don’t know if I can blame them as a year ago I probably would have done the same thing. All for the greater good, of protecting the larger number against the few. Some things to think on as I decide my next course of action.
