Defense With The BoomStick
(Disclaimer: This post is an ongoing story set in a world where zombies have taken over and people are fighting to survive anyway they can. Originally it was a post of news and tips to help survivors make it one more day alive, but now it has became a story of my fight to survive and to keep on living.)
Year 5. Week 40.
Guess some zombies heard about our actions in northern California and wanted to come play. About a thousand or so came up from the south and hit us as we were finishing up cleaning out this small community. The funneling nature of the streets allowed us to get a defensive line set and kill a good number of undead bastards before retreating further back. We let a little air support take out any mobs that were moving around to flank us and had the situation under control in a few hours.
On our side there weren't many casualties except for a handful when a small pack got the drop on them. I think our unit is fighting much more cohesively and are communicating as well as trusting each other a lot better. With being such a ragtag group it would take some time for a united front to emerge, but with each battle and victory we are becoming that much tighter. Morale is certainly higher than it's ever been for a lot of us as over the past few years there has not been much to keep ones hopes up.
Now with this new mass of zombie corpses it will take awhile before we leave this town, as we have to dispose of them all. Burning bodies takes times and we have to take care we don’t get any infected blood anywhere on us, so this will take some doing. The government forces with us are calling in more support to help with disposal, but there's also an increased recon amount. With those radioactive zombies out there thinking and controlling zombies I wouldn’t put it past them to send in a manageable amount of zombies to keep us in one place. They know we'll burn them all to clear out this town, allowing them to amass a larger force to wipe us out.
With more surveillance and scouts out further than our location we'll keep an eye for any masses headed our way. At the first sight, we grab our gear and go, leaving some decoy buoys to lure any zombies in and then bomb the hell out of the spot. As the years wind on and human survivor numbers dwindle, those zombies need us alive at the moment more than anything to continue their food source. This is becoming a battle not of outright attrition, but a battle of old with plotting, planning and using your resources wisely.
This tells us something though. It tells us we're winning. It tells us we'll prevail so long as we keep pushing, fighting and surviving anyway we can. In breaking us down and apart, the zombies have given us a chance to regroup and reform into a new society that doesn’t fear the zombie, but faces it down.
It's a new day.
